WHAT IS ART THERAPY?
Art Therapy is defined as a psychological therapy incorporating the use of creativity and supports social, emotional and mental health needs. (The British Association of Art Therapists. BAAT). Assessment for suitability of Art Therapy is included at the early stage. The process of therapy involves time to gradually explore feelings and working towards the end of therapy in a planned, supportive way.
Art making is central to the process which allows communication of complex emotions that are difficult to explain in words. Artistic ability or having an interest in art is not required. Art Therapy helps each individual work through issues in a less direct way, especially if they find one to one situation difficult
Art Therapy includes exploring the meaning each image holds for each person and not about making interpretations. Through the course of Art Therapy the aim is to assist each individual, at their pace, gain some understanding of their world and in turn gradual changes can be made.
